One of the things I appreciate in the group riding lessons is how Randi Thompson begins with the same exercise shows how it can work with different horses and riders of different levels. We all learn so much by watching actually knowing what our horses might be able to do, and see if our horse can do any of the movement, or already knows how to do it. We learn refinement by watching others practice the skills. I watch how she can do the same patterns with the horses and riders of different training levels. That way we can have a better understanding of how what I am doing works with all the horses and riders. I also like how she can stop in mid-lesson and focus more on what’s going on with a horse and rider and then changes the lesson to deal with another way to do an exercise.. It is like Randi can take us into another direction that we can all follow to a deeper knowingness of what we were trying to accomplish in the in that exercise. My objective in going to these group riding lessons to really learn how to ride a horse. I’ve had other lessons and think I have a been exposed to many trainers. I think That what most people need to understand, in riding horses is finding out how to be aware of is happening with our riding positions and the skills we want to teach our horses. We all laugh when Randi says “Can you feel what is happening now?” I may not be aware of it that exact moment but now know that I’m starting to feel what is happening as I ride my horse. It really helps to see other riders learning the same things.
I have a new horse. He’s very interested in things going on around him. Now I have learned how important it is for me to be able to get his focus back on me so that I am in control. I’ve heard people say “I’ve learned more in one lesson with Randi than anywhere else I have been.” And, I thought I could never do that!
